Exploring the Crowley Lake Stone Columns: A Hidden Gem in California

Finally, the long-awaited temple has been reached! 😆 Nestled in the heart of California, the Crowley Lake Stone Columns offer a breathtaking view and a unique outdoor adventure. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking to explore, this location is a perfect getaway. 📍

The Journey to the Stone Columns

As seen in the pictures (1-5), the stone columns appear almost otherworldly—like something out of a sci-fi movie. However, be prepared for the elements! The wind was incredibly strong and chilly, with majestic snow-capped mountains right next to us.

Pictures 6-9 capture the more challenging road conditions we faced on our way to the columns.

Essential Tips for Visiting

  • 1️⃣ Vehicle Access: If you have a high-clearance vehicle, you can off-road for about 10 minutes to reach the destination. Otherwise, park at the trailhead and hike in for approximately 50 minutes.
  • 2️⃣ Walking Time: Once you arrive, expect a 10-minute return trip on foot, which includes a 5-minute stroll from the upper to the lower viewing points. Remember, if you’re visiting in winter, wear shoes with good grip! The snow has compacted into ice, making it extremely slippery. I found myself taking 40 minutes for what should have been a quick walk, falling three times along the way! 🤣
  • 3️⃣ Safety Precautions: It’s advisable to avoid venturing into the columns themselves, as there’s a risk of collapse. Although I’m new to off-roading, I decided to forge ahead. On the day of our visit, there was still snow, and I encountered an intimidatingly high sand slope that required some bravery to tackle. At one point, we even got stuck, but after switching to 4-low and using all our effort, we finally made it through! ✌️

The Story Behind the Stone Columns

The origin of the stone columns dates back approximately 760,000 years to the eruption of the Long Valley Caldera. After the eruption, volcanic ash settled, compacted, and ultimately solidified into tuff. Over time, lake water erosion and hydrothermal activity gradually revealed these impressive vertical structures. Scientists believe the unique shapes of these columns are a result of cracks and symmetrical fractures that formed during the cooling process of the volcanic ash. 🥹

Final Thoughts

This trip was more than just an outdoor adventure; it was an experience filled with challenges and breathtaking views. Exploring the Crowley Lake Stone Columns is undoubtedly worth the visit! 😊✌️
