Hello, Friends! A Candid Discussion on US College Admissions

Greetings! I am Lao Xiao. 🤗 Time flies and early admissions results for US colleges are already out this year. We’ve observed that Harvard University has reported zero offers for students from mainland China, while Stanford and MIT have seen a noticeable decline in early admission rates compared to last year. This serves as a wake-up call for students from mainland China aiming for top universities.

The Reality of Chinese Students’ Applications

Mainland Chinese students from international high schools often boast exceptional GPAs, high SAT scores, and extensive extracurricular activities but frequently encounter hurdles in their applications.

  • 📍 Are students simply not good enough? Their grades are indeed impressive.
  • 📍 Are the courses they study not competitive enough? This isn’t entirely true either.

Key Concerns: Trust and Transparency

⚠️ The core issue, in my opinion, is the collapse of the trust system for mainland Chinese students in the eyes of US admissions officers.

Recently, the international education community was abuzz with the “Princeton admission fraud” scandal, highlighting concerns like:

  • ⭕ “It’s likely that Ivy League schools will become increasingly cautious of applicants from mainland China, with acceptance rates dropping further.”

Beyond Application Fraud

‼️ The issue of fraud isn’t limited to applications alone.

  • 🔶 In mainland China, the international high school curriculum lacks transparency. Many new schools fail to create clear academic profiles, leading admissions officers to question the validity of reported achievements.
  • 🔶 In recent years, application materials have become alarmingly homogeneous: perfect GPAs, high standardized test scores, and repetitive awards. Admissions officers might feel overwhelmed, unable to see any student’s unique qualities!

🔔 Are you truly exceptional, or are you just another product of an overly polished process?

  • 🔶 Instances of cheating in standardized tests like the SAT, AP, and AMC have also raised alarms.

These troubling events have understandably made admissions officers more vigilant regarding students from mainland China. The early admissions statistics this year substantiate this trend and, regrettably, indicate that the path for mainland Chinese students to enter Ivy League schools is becoming increasingly difficult.

Rethinking Education Plans

As parents and students, it’s crucial for us to reevaluate our educational strategies in light of these realities.

  • ✔️ Perhaps it’s time to demystify the allure of the top 30 US colleges. While Ivy League schools hold prestige, it’s essential to consider actual acceptance rates, as universities ranked 30-50 also offer outstanding education. A university doesn’t need to be “perfect” but should match the unique needs of your child.
  • ✔️ Furthermore, it’s vital to ensure that application materials avoid “homogenization.” They should highlight your child’s authenticity and uniqueness.

Allow me to reiterate: without the influence of parents, stripped of labels, trophies, and removed from the pressure of grades, who are you?

Embracing Authenticity

💫 For students from mainland China, instead of getting lost in standardized scores and accolades, it is crucial to return to authenticity. By focusing on self-discovery, it becomes possible to carve out a successful and meaningful application journey.

Let’s embrace our unique stories—after all, every journey has its path, and yours could be the one that leads you to the right university!
