Returning to Jinan: Navigating the Challenges of Public School Enrollment for Expat Kids
It’s hard to believe that it has already been a month and a half since my return to Jinan! During this time, I’ve accomplished quite a bit. In my search for a place to live, I viewed six apartments before settling on one, and I also reviewed four office buildings to choose the perfect workspace. The move and shopping extravaganza followed, as I adapted to the local lifestyle. So far, I’m getting the hang of it quite well! Today marks the start of school, and I wanted to document the process of enrolling my child in a public school here.
Why We Chose Public Schooling
The decision to opt for public schooling was driven by the abundance of resources and excellent facilities near my parents’ residence. After exploring various private and international schools, we found that the quality private schools do not accept transfer students, making public schools a more suitable option for us.
Consulting the Education Bureau
Before we proceeded, I reached out to the local education bureau to inquire about the enrollment process for expat children. I was pleased to learn that transferring to public schools is indeed possible. Notably, when selecting classes, students can be placed according to their Chinese language proficiency and academic level rather than their age. This flexibility ensures that my child can join a class that better suits their learning needs.
The Enrollment Process
Following the guidelines, I downloaded the “Love Shandong” app to register during the specified enrollment period, uploading all necessary documentation. Once the application was submitted, the school promised to notify parents by phone regarding admission outcomes within a designated time frame.
First Day of School as a Transfer Student
Today was the big day for transfer students to report to school! The institution places significant emphasis on the physical and mental wellbeing of children, acknowledging the importance of a familiarization process when adjusting to a new environment. They have also laid out various programs intended to foster multi-faceted development in children.
After meeting with the homeroom teacher and the English instructor, I was happy to have my child appointed as the English class representative! Everything is progressing smoothly, and I’m looking forward to this new chapter in our lives. Let’s do this! 💪
Final Thoughts
Relocating and enrolling in a new school is a significant transition, especially for expat families. By documenting this experience, I hope it can serve as a guide for others in similar circumstances. As we settle into this new routine, I am optimistic about the enriching experience awaiting us. Education is a vital part of our lives, and I’m eager to see my child thrive in this supportive environment!
