The Pitt: A Must-Watch for Medical Drama Lovers!
Recently, a few emergency department heads in my circle recommended a series called The Pitt. They say it offers the most realistic portrayal of our day-to-day work in the emergency medical field. Interestingly, the writers are two seasoned emergency physicians from the USA. Intrigued, I decided to look it up, and indeed, the scenes in the trailer seemed quite authentic!
Unfortunately, it can only be streamed on Binge, which requires a separate paid subscription—that’s a bit inconvenient. Just when I was about to give up on the show, I discovered that the lead actor is none other than Dr. John Carter from ER! ER was the first medical drama I ever watched, igniting my passion for emergency medicine. I fondly remember binge-watching episodes with my college roommate at the internet café. Years have passed, and here he is again, back as an emergency doctor! I simply couldn’t resist; I quickly subscribed, opened the app, and now here I am late at night on my couch, buzzing with excitement after watching the premiere episode. Hence, this quick and fresh review!
A Realistic Glimpse into Emergency Medicine
After watching the first episode, I can confidently say that it captures the essence of a Western hospital’s emergency department remarkably well. From the layout of the resuscitation room to the electronic medical records system, everything feels meticulously recreated. Even the use of a stapler for suturing scalp wounds appears authentic!
Moreover, the show’s consistent reference to POCUS (Point-of-Care Ultrasound) reflects the current advancements in emergency medicine, illustrating how relevant and up-to-date the program is. The progression of most medical conditions and their treatment seems quite logical, and the ethical dilemmas posed are reasonable—free from the unnecessary personal heroism often seen in other series.
A Valuable Resource for Medical Students
If you’re studying medical English or are curious about the day-to-day operations in an emergency department, this show is a treasure trove of insights. Compared to shows like The Good Doctor and House, The Pitt provides a more rational depiction of real-life medical scenarios. Overall, I highly recommend it!
