Unforgettable Adventures in New Mexico: Exploring a Cold War Missile Silo
During the week leading up to Christmas, I had the incredible opportunity to travel through New Mexico with my friend Master Zhang. We spent nine days filled with unforgettable highlights, but the coolest experience by far was our visit to a Cold War-era missile launch site! 🚀
Unearthing History at the 579 SMS Site 4
The missile silo we explored is the 579 SMS Site 4, located just twenty minutes from Roswell. Originally part of the Cold War missile program, it served as one of the launch sites for the Atlas-F intercontinental ballistic missile, which was constructed in the 1960s. With the end of the Cold War, many of these facilities were gradually abandoned in the 1960s and 70s, with most being either buried or repurposed. However, this New Mexico site has undergone several transformations and is now one of the few open to the public for an overnight stay.
Your Stay in a Unique Airbnb
This Airbnb features a two-story underground bunker and a missile launch silo that reaches depths of 186 feet. Upon checking in, you’ll need to contact the owner, Gary, who will send his friend Raul to guide you through the historical significance of the outdoor facilities, share fascinating stories from the Cold War, and outline the daily lives of the personnel who once operated there. The tour lasts about two hours and is packed with information, so it’s advisable to arrive early to enjoy some free time afterward. If visiting during the winter, don’t forget to dress warmly, as much of the tour is conducted outdoors. ❄️
Exploring the Bunker and Silo
Once the tour concludes, you’ll have free rein over the bunker and missile silo. But here’s a tip: it’s not a good idea to fly drones inside the silo! 😂 We attempted to launch our DJI Air 3, but the deep structure nearly caused the drone to lose control. So we highly recommend avoiding drone activities within the silo.
Cozy Accommodations Await
Your stay will be in the cozy underground bunker, which is well-equipped for comfort. The only downside? The beds are twin-sized! While Raul resides on the lower level, the soundproofing is excellent, ensuring you won’t disturb each other during your stay.
