Living with Roommate’s Girlfriend: A Cautionary Tale for International Students
It has been proven that agreeing to let my roommate’s girlfriend stay in our rented apartment a month ago was one of the worst decisions I’ve made since studying abroad. If only I could travel back in time to give myself a wake-up call! 😩 Let’s refer to this girl as “A.”
The Horror of Poor Sound Insulation
As most people know, apartments in the USA often suffer from terrible sound insulation, especially in older buildings. Ever since A moved in, my once-peaceful life has been shattered. Whenever A and my roommate are around, A frequently screams and emits a constant high-pitched noise. I’ve heard A speak normally, so I know it isn’t her natural tone—this shrillness is a recent development. Now, I truly understand how terrifying it can be to experience a sudden, loud scream from a ‘crazy person’! 😱 Not to mention, I’ve developed a significant psychological trauma related to high-pitched noises. At this moment, as I write this post just before 1 AM, A is next door wailing at the top of her lungs. I genuinely feel like I’m on the brink of a mental breakdown!
A Kitchen Catastrophe
Moreover, since A’s arrival, the kitchen has turned into a disaster zone. Every evening when I return home, I’m greeted by a messy sight: dirty pots and pans piled high, a greasy stove that looks like it hasn’t seen soap in ages, and a kitchen table that’s simply unusable because of the filth. They even leave used utensils lying directly on the table! If I want to prepare a late-night snack, I have to first clean up their mess. 😤 Even if I manage to tidy up, the kitchen somehow relapses back into chaos by the next day. My roommate didn’t maintain this level of mess before A moved in; I can’t fathom what exactly has caused this dramatic shift.
The Communication Challenge
To add icing on the cake, I suspect that A has communication issues. Since I didn’t know A personally, and I wanted to keep a good relationship with my roommate, I decided not to approach A directly about my concerns. I often expressed to my roommate that A’s loud outbursts could be startling and disruptive. However, my comments have fallen on deaf ears. Rather than any improvement, I’ve witnessed A dismissing my roommate’s attempts to quiet her, insisting, “It’s all because of you!” 🤨 I’ve never encountered someone quite so audacious living under someone else’s roof.
A Cautionary Conclusion
In summary, I would strongly advise all international students against rooming with couples. It’s best to thoroughly investigate your roommate’s relationship status beforehand to ensure they are single. You can never anticipate the alarming chemical reactions that occur when two perfectly normal individuals turn into a couple living together. 🚫💔
