My Journey Through the OMSCS Program: A Reflection
After two years of hard work and dedication, I have officially completed all the courses in the OMSCS program! 🎉 Now, I eagerly await my graduation certificate. My focus was on the Computing Systems track, so I intentionally avoided taking any courses related to Machine Learning or AI. Below is the list of courses I completed, in order:
- CS 6250 — Computer Networks
- CS 6300 — Software Development Process
- CS 6200 — Graduate Introduction to Operating Systems
- CS 6603 — AI Ethics and Society
- CS 6400 — Database Systems Concepts & Design
- INTA 6450 — Data Analytics and Security
- CS 6035 — Introduction to Information Security
- MGT 8813 — Financial Modeling
- CS 6262 — Network Security
- CS 6515 — Introduction to Graduate Algorithms
Reflections on My OMSCS Experience
Looking back over these two years, I can say that I initially joined the OMSCS program out of necessity. At my previous job, I felt overwhelmed and was longing to switch careers to become a Data Engineer (DE). I faced numerous interview challenges, feeling inadequate without a formal computer science background, which led me to impulsively apply to the program. Ironically, it was a great time to make a career transition into tech, as many of my former colleagues were successfully making the jump to prominent tech companies without needing a CS degree. Meanwhile, I was hesitant, slogging through this degree.
Some courses were undeniably rigorous and mentally taxing. There were moments when I questioned the value of enduring such challenges. However, I am pleased that I persevered. Now, as I conclude my studies, I find a sense of accomplishment in having completed a formal CS degree. It’s a personal victory worth celebrating! 💪
What’s Next?
As I contemplate my next steps, I am still exploring my options. I might consider applying for more tech-focused positions, but my current job is quite comfortable. I recently received a promotion and work in a fully remote environment where my boss doesn’t micromanage. It’s refreshing and has made me realize that self-doubt can often stem from the environment rather than my skills. Consequently, I don’t feel the urgency to seek entry-level positions anymore. 😂
For now, my plan is to take a breather before deciding my next career move. Sometimes, stepping back and reflecting is the best way to choose the future path that feels right! 🌟
Final Thoughts
Embarking on the OMSCS journey has been transformative. It’s taught me resilience and the importance of pursuing knowledge. Whether it’s through navigating challenging courses or considering the next steps in my career, I’m grateful for this experience and excited for what lies ahead! 🚀
