Solo Travel Across the USA: A Journey to Remember

Solo Travel Across the USA: A Journey to Remember

Let me share my experience of embarking on an unforgettable solo adventure across the United States! 🎒 After graduating with my master’s degree, I faced some challenges finding a job. So, I decided to take a breather and embark on a spontaneous trip, crafting a route around the beautiful national parks and vibrant cities of the USA. Looking back, I am so grateful I took the time to do this; finding such long stretches of time for travel becomes increasingly difficult once you step into the professional world.

The Journey Begins: Oregon to California

My adventure started in Portland, Oregon, where I set off to Crater Lake National Park. The beauty of the deep blue lake surrounded by cliffs was the perfect introduction to my journey. After soaking in the magnificence of Crater Lake, I headed south to California.

In California, I made stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but the highlights were the breathtaking vistas of Yosemite National Park and Pinnacles National Park. Each location offered unique landscapes and an abundance of activities—hiking, sightseeing, and photographing the majestic views.

Exploring the National Parks of Utah

Next, my route took me from Los Angeles to the majestic state of Utah, renowned for its stunning national parks, known collectively as the Big Five: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands. Each park showcased nature’s artistry, from the towering cliffs of Zion to the unique rock formations at Arches.

Colorado’s Natural Wonders

While traversing through Colorado, I explored Mesa Verde National Park, rich in ancient Puebloan history, and the Great Sand Dunes National Park, where towering sand dunes meet snow-capped mountains—a surreal sight!

Eastward Bound: Through the Heart of America

My eastward journey continued through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and into Tennessee, where I couldn’t miss the chance to visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The mist-covered mountains offered a serene experience amidst lush greenery.

Blue Ridge Parkway and Iconic Cities

Traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway through Virginia, I made a point to visit Shenandoah National Park. The park’s scenic views and hiking trails were a highlight. The adventure didn’t stop there as I explored prominent cities in the East, including New York City, Boston, and Washington D.C.. I also visited some prestigious universities like Princeton, Yale, MIT, and Harvard.

Final Stops: Niagara Falls and Back to Portland

After Boston, my westward return took me through New York to the magnificent Niagara Falls. The roar of the falling water was a stunning conclusion to my eastern leg. I spent a couple of days in Chicago, enjoying the city’s architecture and vibrant culture.

Finally, I traveled through Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska back to my home state of Wyoming, where I spent a few days reminiscing about my journey. After soaking in the nostalgia, I made my way back through Idaho and Oregon to return to Portland.
