Cross-Country Move from New York to Los Angeles: A Comprehensive Guide

Making the leap from New York City to Los Angeles? It can be an exhilarating experience but also a daunting one! Here’s a breakdown of my journey, detailing the costs, moving services, and tips to help ensure a smoother transition. 🚚✨

Moving Costs

My total expenses for relocating my belongings (a 765sqft worth of furniture, household items, and clothing) amounted to approximately $3,500. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • U-Haul U-Boxes: I utilized two U-Boxes for the move, opting for onsite loading. The total cost for shipping to LA and nearly a month of storage came to around $2,500. This was a fixed price, similar to online quotes, and included insurance which added an additional $200 or so.
  • Delivery Fee: There was also a delivery charge of about $80 to bring my belongings to a U-Haul location near my new home.

When planning your move, consider hiring local moving companies in both New York and Los Angeles to assist with packing and loading your U-Boxes, as this can ease some of the burden.

Choosing the Right Moving Company in New York

For my New York move, I chose a company called Piece of Cake, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision! They operate on a flat-rate system based on the specifics of your move, which I found beneficial. This pricing structure prevents movers from dragging their feet. My initial quote was around $700, but after mentioning a cheaper quote from a competitor, they promptly adjusted the price to $495.

Despite some negative reviews regarding their service, I spoke directly with the representative handling my case, who assured me he would oversee everything and that I could add items to my inventory without changing the price. Their team completed the move in just about four and a half hours, and I barely had to lift a finger! They were both professional and efficient. 🌟

The Bumpy Ride in Los Angeles

Unfortunately, my experience with a moving company in Los Angeles was not as smooth. Despite glowing reviews online, the movers I hired turned out to be students from USC who struggled with even the most basic tasks. For instance, they took an agonizing forty minutes to assemble a bed incorrectly before needing to fix it. The unloading process itself took forty to fifty minutes, significantly longer than my team in New York, who loaded two U-Boxes in just twenty to thirty minutes.

Frustratingly, we ended up moving the rest of our furniture ourselves using the freight elevator and unwrapping moving blankets. It felt like a massive letdown after the efficiency I experienced in New York. I noted that this Los Angeles company charged by the hour, which I believe contributed to their lack of efficiency. 😩

Final Thoughts

Overall, my cross-country moving experience was relatively smooth despite a few bumps along the way! If anyone has questions or needs advice on moving, feel free to leave a comment. To all the fellow students or professionals moving across states: best of luck, and may your relocation journey be as seamless as possible! 💪🌎
