Exploring Chinese Cuisine in Edison, NJ: A Culinary Journey

Recently, I attended a meeting in Edison, NJ, and decided to embark on a culinary adventure to rescue my underwhelmed palate after some disappointing experiences with Chinese food in Philadelphia. Here’s my take on some local gems that boast amazing flavors and incredible dishes! 🙏🏻

1. 湘水山庄 (Xiang Shui Shan Zhuang) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This restaurant offers an amazing selection of dishes! I highly recommend trying the Yam Pastry, Fat Intestines, Sand Ginger Chicken, and Stinky Tofu. The Spicy Chicken was somewhat average, but there were no real disappointments here—everything pairs beautifully with rice! 👍👍

2. 王老师烧烤 (Wang Laoshi BBQ) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing flavor! Everything in the photos was delightful, and none of the dishes were overly greasy. However, keep in mind that the meals are on the heavier side, so we ended up ordering a refreshing Cucumber Salad to lighten things up!

3. 金小娇花胶鸡火锅 (Jin Xiao Jiao Flower Glue Chicken Hot Pot) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Delicious with a rich broth! The chicken was tender, and just like hot pot spots back home, they offer free side dishes. (Unlike some Philadelphia hot pot restaurants that skimp on variety and charge an arm and a leg.)

4. 小食代 (Snack Generation) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A treat for the taste buds! The Smoked Fish was tender, and the Small Yellow Croaker was delightfully crispy. While the flavors can’t quite match those back in China, as a half-Shanghai local, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this hometown dish!

5. 蟹宝 (Crab Treasure) ⭐️⭐️

Disappointing! Though I expected the crab meat to be frozen, it turned out worse than anticipated. The crab meat was too flaky, lacking flavor, and the dumpling skins were overly thick. Since these were pre-made dishes, I was shocked at how long it took for our food to be served.

6. 敦煌 (Dun Huang) ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is an average spot for Northwest cuisine. The oil-splash noodles were a bit lifeless, while the Meat Wrapped Buns had a thick skin. However, the lamb shank was quite delicious, offering a juicy experience instead of a dry one.

Delicious Desserts

7. mangomango ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This spot isn’t particularly remarkable, but it’s worth the visit. While nothing stood out as exceptional, there were no unpleasant surprises either!

8. 鲜芋仙 (Fresh Taro Xian) ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I skipped the taro balls, but the shaved ice with three parts sweetness was quite sugary. However, I must say the Tofu Pudding without sugar was surprisingly delightful!

Future Taste Tests

I can’t wait to return next year to sample more dishes, particularly the popular Mountain City Hot Pot. Feeling a tinge of envy for those studying at Rutgers who get to enjoy this culinary scene regularly!
