The Lost City is an archaeological wonder that sat hidden for 1,200 years, buried beneath the thick canopy of Colombia’s Amazon rainforest. Unlike Machu Picchu, which is frequently visited, The Lost City was only rediscovered in the last few decades. The stunning ruins date back 600 years earlier than its more famous counterpart—making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike!

The nearest airport is located in Santa Marta, a beautiful coastal city on the Caribbean Sea. Most tour companies offer excursions that start here, putting you right before the adventure ahead! Santa Marta is also the hometown of famed author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, making it a perfect stop to explore more.
Typical Itinerary 🗺️
Most tours to The Lost City follow a similar itinerary:
- Day 1: Drive to the starting point and embark on a 7km warm-up hike to the campsite, where you’ll enjoy hanging hammocks and swimming in natural pools.
- Day 2: Brace yourself for the most challenging day—14km of steep ascents, encountering indigenous tribes and frolicking in rivers along the route.
- Day 3: Climb the awe-inspiring 1,200 steps built by the Tayrona. Reach the pinnacle—the Lost City—before returning 9.6km back in the afternoon.
- Day 4: Complete your trek with a final 12.7km hike back to the starting point.
We highly recommend a local guide you may meet during your journey. Fluent in Mandarin and passionate about sharing his knowledge of the area, he offers insights into both the history and rich biodiversity of the region. Note that while our group was English-speaking, we were pleasantly surprised by the diverse cultural interactions!
Things to Remember ⚠️
- Insect Repellent: Mosquitos thrive in the rainforest—don’t forget your bug spray!
- Swimwear: Pack your swimsuit and towel as there will be plenty of opportunities to take a dip.
- Light Layers: While you’re in a tropical region, temperatures can drop to around 14°C (57°F) at night due to the altitude—even in March!
- Additional Essentials: Bring flip-flops, a flashlight, and sunscreen to ensure you’re fully prepared for this incredible adventure.
