The Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCs) at Georgia Tech: A Comprehensive Guide
Recently, I’ve been receiving numerous inquiries about the Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCs) program at Georgia Tech. To help prospective students, I decided to compile a summary of my experience with this affordable and highly reputed degree program.
🌟 My Background
I obtained my undergraduate degree in a non-CS field in China before pursuing a Master’s in Architectural Engineering at Georgia Tech. After graduating in December 2018, I applied for the OMSCS program and commenced my studies in Fall 2019. Since then, I have juggled full-time work alongside coursework and expect to graduate by the end of 2024. I am indeed a career-switcher!
🌟 Duration
The OMSCS program allows students to tailor the pace of their studies. While many manage to complete the degree within 2 to 4 years, I opted to take only one course each semester due to genuine interest in acquiring new knowledge, leading to an extended duration of over 5 years. Students can have up to a maximum of 6 years to finish their degree.
🌟 Costs
The program is known for its affordability, with costs around $600-$700 per course. To graduate, students must complete a total of 10 courses, making it possible to obtain a Master’s degree for under $10,000! If your employer provides reimbursement, the financial burden can be almost non-existent. This degree truly offers fantastic value.
🌟 Academic Performance
Throughout my studies, I have maintained a GPA of 4.0 across both programs. While I take pride in my academic success, I am also aware of the courses I had to withdraw from due to balancing work and life commitments. It’s important to recognize when you start to feel overwhelmed.
🌟 Application Process
Applying for the OMSCS program is similar to applying for other master’s degrees. The official website provides comprehensive details, and the program is open to students from various academic backgrounds. Preference is given to candidates with relevant degrees or experience.
🌟 Degree Recognition
The degree awarded for the OMSCS program is equivalent to that given for on-campus students. However, while the program is well-regarded in the USA, I have heard that its recognition in China may not extend to online degrees. Below is a screenshot comparing the diplomas from online and onsite programs.
🌟 Student Status
As a part-time student, the OMSCS program does not provide F-1 visas. However, students wishing to transition to full-time on-campus status can contact their adviser to discuss potential options.
🌟 Course Structure
The OMSCS program offers various specializations. Each has different course requirements, which can be explored further at OMSC Specializations. Before graduation, students must choose their specialization.
Courses primarily consist of pre-recorded lecture videos uploaded to the Canvas system. Assignments and exams are evaluated by professors and teaching assistants, with communications occurring through ED Discussion. Some courses emphasize projects while others focus on exams. The examination process employs the Honorlock system, often allowing several days for completion and prohibiting any form of private discussion among students. It is important to note that the program upholds a high level of seriousness and integrity, making it quite difficult to “coast” through. As someone who has transitioned from a different discipline, I believe that with commitment, graduation from this program is entirely achievable.
🌟 Conclusion
In summary, completing the OMSCS program at Georgia Tech has been a rewarding journey. I will continue taking courses, and I encourage anyone interested to join the OMSCS community for learning and discussion!
