Understanding the Dilemma of Pursuing Graduate Studies in the USA

The fall application season is winding down, and I have had the fortune to gain recognition from prestigious institutions like UC Berkeley, Columbia University, the University of Michigan, and Carnegie Mellon University. However, my personal feelings about pursuing a graduate degree in the United States have become increasingly clouded with confusion. 😶

Key Considerations in My Decision

As I reflect on my options, several factors weigh heavily on my mind:

  • High Costs: Regardless of the program I choose, the expenses are expected to be around ¥1,000,000 (approximately $150,000). If I return to my home country post-graduation, it could take an extended period to recoup this investment. Moreover, the salary I might earn after studying in the U.S. doesn’t appear to offer a decisive advantage compared to what I could earn with a master’s degree from a well-regarded institution in China. The potential return on investment feels insufficient, and I’m not in a position to spend such a substantial amount merely for a transient experience.
  • Reluctance to Emigrate: While pursuing a graduate degree in the U.S. opens doors to work opportunities and potentially relocating abroad, my past experiences living in both China and the U.S. have not instilled a strong preference for one over the other. I maintain close and harmonious relationships with friends and family in China, and the prospect of living comfortably in Beijing appeals to me. My ambitions are not focused on starting anew in North America.

Reflections on the Application Journey

At the outset of the application season, I was filled with enthusiasm and dedicated a significant amount of time to crafting my own applications. The results were promising, as I received offers from a number of impressive institutions. However, throughout this journey, I have grappled with the underlying value of studying abroad and what it truly means for my future.

If anyone else is facing similar feelings of uncertainty, I would love to connect and share experiences. 😢
