Two years ago today, I participated in my naturalization ceremony and officially became a citizen of the United States. These past two years have brought both conveniences and challenges, and I’d like to share the advantages and disadvantages of citizenship for those who may be debating their own decisions. 🌏

• After canceling my Chinese passport, trips back home required advance visa applications (I processed mine at the consulate in New York, but there are agents available that can save you time and stress!).
• Handling property transactions in China can be complicated, requiring various notarizations and proof that “the American me is still the Chinese me.”
• Expect long waits at immigration; plus, you’ll need to register with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. Note that some hotels don’t accept foreign guests (thankfully, you can now often handle registration via smartphone!).

2️⃣ Taxation Challenges:

• You’re required to report global income, and managing international assets may necessitate a professional consultant’s help (Green Card holders face this issue too).

3️⃣ Everyday Life Hassles:

• Banking and phone accounts need to be re-registered with your US passport.
• When purchasing train tickets back home, you must use your passport and go through manual channels.

🟢 The “Perks” of Citizenship

1️⃣ Spontaneous Travel Opportunities:

• Countless countries offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival options! Business trips to the UK and Canada, travel within Europe and Japan… all achievable with just one passport. ✈️

2️⃣ More Flexible Family Planning:

• You can apply for Green Cards for your parents (though many older relatives prefer life in China, and we ultimately decided against it). 😔
• Spousal inheritance rights in the US come with no monetary cap, though non-citizen spouses may face estate taxes on the portion over $675,000.

3️⃣ Citizen Rights:

• You can finally vote! While one vote may not change the world, participating is what matters. 🗳️

🇺🇸 Why Choose Citizenship?

Frequent trips to North America and Europe have highlighted the ease of visa-free travel, but I still feel the pain of visa applications each time I return home. I attempted to obtain Green Cards for my parents but eventually abandoned the idea due to cultural adjustment issues (and let’s not forget the rising inflation and the challenges of not driving!).
