Exploring White Sands National Park: A Hidden Gem in New Mexico
Located in the southern part of New Mexico, White Sands National Park is known for being the largest gypsum desert in the world. The endless white dunes look like something out of a fairy tale, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable experience! 🌟
Getting There 🚗
If you’re planning a trip from Albuquerque (ABQ), be prepared for a 3.5-hour drive. To fully enjoy your day, it’s best to leave early. On our visit, we departed around 2 PM, which left us with just an hour before sunset upon arrival. Beware that driving back can be dark 💀, so don’t forget to keep your headlights on!
Entrance Fees 🎟️
The park charges a fee of $25 per vehicle, but if you frequent national parks, consider investing in an annual pass for savings!
Must-Visit Spots 📍
One of the highlights is the Alkali Flat Trail. Due to time constraints, we drove straight to the trail’s endpoint. Along the way, you’ll witness increasingly white sand piles. There are several stopping points and parking areas along the route. For the best photo opportunities, venture further into the dunes; the sand there is even whiter and untouched.
Fun Activities 🏄♀️
Sledding on Sand: Bring your own sled or buy one at the visitor center, and find a sand pile with some height and slope. Enjoy the thrill of sliding down the dunes!
Stunning Sunsets 🌅
The sunsets at White Sands are a breathtaking sight, with a stunning blend of pink and orange skies complementing the white dunes. Every snapshot turns into a picturesque background for your desktop or social media!
Stargazing 🌌
If you’re able to stay until dark, prepare for a cosmic display! The remote location of the park means minimal light pollution, allowing countless stars to shimmer against the night sky.
Important Tips ❗️
If you arrive early, remember to take sun protection seriously! Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must, as the sun can be intense here. Additionally, pack plenty of water and snacks to avoid feeling dehydrated and hungry after your hike (trust me, you don’t want to find out the hard way! 🥵). There are limited food options nearby, so make sure you’re prepared!
