The Contrast of Life: From Hong Kong to Rural USA
It has been a while since I updated this series, as I’ve been busy submitting several grants, but let’s continue our chat! 🌍
Adjusting to Life in Rural America
Having grown up and studied in mainland China and Hong Kong, I became accustomed to the convenience of daily life. However, transitioning to a rural area in the USA came with its challenges. Simple tasks, like grocery shopping, can take half an hour or more. Sometimes it feels like stepping out is just a means to gather groceries. 🛒
The Grocery Shopping Experience
Whether it’s Costco, Whole Foods, or a local market, the experience can often become tiresome. A shopping trip that initially brings joy soon turns into a chore. While the excitement of exploring new items keeps the spirit alive for a visit or two, the thrill fades over time. What started as a fun outing for shopping becomes a necessity of daily survival. After all, dining out isn’t as budget-friendly either; tips seem to increase faster than wage growth! 💸
Finding Farewell in Feast
At least there was Chowbus, which once provided a ray of hope for enjoying delicious Chinese food from Flushing while in New Haven. Unfortunately, it was later acquired, limiting those tasty options. In stark contrast, returning to Hong Kong reignites my love for food. The streets are filled with mouth-watering delights, and a delicious meal at a restaurant can cost only $20-30 without the addition of tips. This experience is truly a dual gratification for the taste buds and the soul. 🍜
Life Beyond Work
Ultimately, life is not just about work; it’s also about enjoying the little pleasures and experiences it has to offer. The vibrant food culture and lively dining scenes in Hong Kong provide a much-needed escape from the mundanity that can sometimes come with living in a rural part of the USA. The balance is essential. ⚖️
Wrapping It Up
As we navigate through the contrasts of life in different countries, it’s crucial to find joy and meaning beyond just daily responsibilities. Whether it’s the ease of dining in Hong Kong or the struggle to find good eats in America, embracing both experiences can shape our perspectives and enrich our journey. Stay tuned for more insights! ✨
