Understanding the Real Costs of Living and Studying in Melbourne as a Postgraduate Student

As a postgraduate business student at Monash University 👨‍🎓, I’m here to share with you the true costs of living in Melbourne for a year. If you’re from an average family in your home country and planning to study here, this information will help you budget better!

Cost Breakdown

Item Amount (AUD) Notes
Tuition Fee 53,900🔪 Business postgraduate fees for 24S2-25S1
Rent 1,650🔪/month Southbank 2b2b accommodation
Living Expenses 800🔪/month Regular grocery shopping, occasional dining out
Transportation 150🔪/month Train travel from CT to Caulfield
Internet & Phone 77🔪/month Optus internet shared with roommate + phone plan
Utilities (Water, Electricity, Gas) ~40🔪/month Shared with roommate
Total 84,000🔪 Conservative estimate, excludes travel, kitchenware, and shopping

Tuition Fees

Monash University tuition fees tend to rise annually. The Business program saw an increase from over 6,000 AUD to more than 7,000 AUD per course this year, which is about a 600🔪 hike!

Accommodation Costs

Initially, I chose a student apartment, which cost around 480🔪 per week, inclusive of utilities. After a few months, I opted to share a 2b2b with a roommate, bringing my costs down to about 400 AUD per week, excluding utilities and internet—an experience that turned out to be quite challenging without furniture! Other more upscale apartments like SC or WSP would incur even higher costs.

Living Expenses

Your living expenses can vary greatly. If you’re someone who cooks at home, purchasing groceries weekly can keep costs down significantly, providing you with delicious meals and a chance to socialize on occasion.

Transportation Costs

Melbourne’s transportation can be pricey! Daily users can expect a cap of 10🔪 on their cards. For students traveling to Monash, using the train typically costs around 5🔪 per ride, potentially adding up to 10 AUD for a round trip within an hour.

Studying Abroad Tips

  • Money-Saving Suggestions: Stock up during supermarket sales, book flights in advance, and shop for second-hand furniture!
  • Insurance Advice: Don’t blindly choose the OSHC offered by your school. Depending on your budget and personal situation—even considering the HPV vaccination—private plans like UniteCare may save you more money. Interested in more details? Stay tuned for my future posts!
