Finding My Dream Apartment in the Bay Area: A Journey to Maxwell at Bascom
During my thrilling search for an apartment in San Jose, I stumbled upon the fantastic Maxwell at Bascom, and I couldn’t be happier! This beautiful new apartment complex began welcoming residents just 25 years ago and currently offers an irresistible deal of 2 months free rent along with a referral bonus of $1000! 📍 Address: 1350 S Bascom Avenue.
The Challenge of Apartment Hunting in the Bay Area
As a December graduate, I arrived in the Bay Area in late February, filled with excitement and determination to find a cozy 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom unit. However, I soon discovered that the competition for housing here is nothing short of “D-level hell.” My initial goal was to secure a satisfactory apartment within just three days, with a budget capped at one-third of my after-tax salary. Little did I know, the challenges ahead were overwhelming.
Supply and Demand: The Key Factors
The root of the problem lies in the supply and demand dynamics. The most popular apartments are often at full capacity, leaving very few options to consider at any given time. My recommendation? Opt for new apartments, as they tend to have a wider selection of units and often offer attractive discounts!
My Apartment Preferences
I had very specific criteria for my perfect apartment: plenty of sunlight and a stunning view, plus good sound insulation and a modern feel. Over the course of six days in the South Bay, I visited 20 different apartment complexes and toured over 60 units. Finally, I was able to settle down in my dream home! Here are the finalists I had on my list for your reference:
- Savoy: Located in Sunnyvale next to Caltrain, it offers convenient access, reasonable pricing, and excellent layouts (though I found one unit’s closet design curious, to say the least). It features a gas stove, but the office staff wasn’t particularly helpful.
- Avelle: This new apartment in Mountain View is conveniently located near the 101 freeway. I toured the penthouse, which provided a lovely view, although it was slightly lacking in vibrancy (the north-facing view felt a bit bland). While it’s pricier, the two months free made it tempting. The staff is friendly, but I’ve heard the sound insulation isn’t the best.
- Miro: Nestled in downtown San Jose, the lighting and views here are unbeatable, making it a tough contender. Miro hosts many activities, including yoga classes and community events—great for sociable individuals, but it could feel a bit pressuring for introverts. Keep in mind, parking downtown can be pricey at $275/month.
- Hearth: I can’t sing enough praises for the accommodating staff at Hearth! Although it’s on the pricier side for its area, it’s located in a quiet neighborhood, and the sixth-floor clubhouse and gym are delightful.
Note: I did not share images of the apartments I toured that I did not sign a lease for—mostly because I was too lazy to dig them up 😂 and because each unit is unique. If you’re looking at potential models, check the apartment’s official website or request videos. However, I still highly advocate for an in-person visit!
Moving Day Bliss
The day I found my perfect apartment, I signed the lease on the spot and moved in the very next day. Looking out the window at the beautiful scenery while sipping my morning coffee on the balcony fills me with joy. I can’t wait to see how my space transforms as I gradually fill it with furniture!
Final Thoughts
I wish everyone the best in finding their perfect home, and I warmly invite you to visit me at Maxwell and consider becoming my neighbor! 🌺🏡 #ApartmentHuntingDiaries #BayAreaRentals #SanJoseLife
