Experiences of a PhD Student in Switzerland

Experiences of a PhD Student in Switzerland

Embarking on a PhD journey in Switzerland is both exciting and challenging, especially in a country renowned for its high cost of living. While it is known as one of the most expensive nations in the world, there are hidden gems of budget-friendly experiences waiting to be discovered. From surprisingly affordable bubbly water at just 0.30 CHF for a 1.5-liter bottle to the common sight of sparkling water machines in public institutions, the contrast is quite remarkable! 🛒

The Community Support System

The support I have received from my friends in Latin America has made my two years here much easier. Every Monday, I attend a church gathering at my school that offers a free vegetarian lunch. Not only do I get to enjoy a filling meal, but it also opens up opportunities for my clinical research by connecting me with potential participants. Interestingly, this community is primarily made up of individuals from different backgrounds, particularly the local white community. 🛒

Diverse Dining Opportunities

As I delve deeper into my community, I’ve discovered another treasure: Chinese church gatherings that offer even more delicious homemade meals! This is where I can savor an array of dishes prepared by first-generation Chinese families. Just look at the delectable offerings in the photos! 🤤 My absolute favorite? Korean-style kimchi! It’s incredible how food can bring joy and excitement to my taste buds, especially when I’m enjoying a communal feast. 🥢💖

Networking and Collaboration

Networking in this space is easier than I anticipated, especially given the warm and welcoming nature of the attendees. The atmosphere is less about competition and more focused on mutual support, free from the usual political tensions one might encounter elsewhere. This makes it easier for me to gather clinical study participants. With their good-hearted approach, I am confident that I will speed up my graduation project seamlessly. 📈✨

A Day of Bounty

Just the day before my visit to the church gathering, I hit the jackpot with two complimentary meals. The church’s small lunch gathering paired with a university aperitif left me fully satisfied. Recently, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy plentiful nutrition, and while I don’t practice any religion myself, I deeply appreciate the generosity of those around me. The struggle is real, and living in Switzerland can be challenging, especially with financial constraints. Yet, I find solace in this community. 🥳🙌

Gratitude and Reflections

In closing, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported me during this journey. I also appreciate my followers for their encouragement and understanding. Their positive vibes keep me motivated! 🌈💪
