Exploring the Wonders of Lake Shasta: A Unique Camping Adventure

At the end of May, I had the unforgettable experience of camping at Lake Shasta. However, it was a thrilling moment when we encountered a bear attack! Surviving a wild encounter is the subject of a detailed note I will share later. But let me take you through another exciting part of my trip: a visit to the stunning Lake Shasta Caverns. 🌄

Discover the Lake Shasta Caverns

The caverns are fascinating geological formations that began to develop 250 million years ago. Its stalactites grow at an astonishing rate of just one millimeter per year. In 1964, it was designated as a National Natural Landmark, showcasing the beauty and history of nature. 🌍

Getting There

It’s only a half-hour drive from Hirz Bay Campground to the caverns, making it quite convenient for adventurers. Once you arrive, the entrance includes a souvenir shop, a snack bar, and a ticket office, highlighting the visitor’s experience.

The Journey Inside the Caverns

The experience begins with a combination of a boat ride and a short bus trip, followed by a walk through the caverns. Please note, as there are stairs involved, strollers and wheelchairs may not be feasible in certain areas due to steep steps. Make sure you’re prepared for a bit of activity! 🥾

Ticketing and Timing

Upon arriving, we were given a ticket for the 10:30 AM tour, which initially puzzled us as we arrived at 9:40 AM. Nonetheless, we spent some time exploring the area outside. The view is breathtaking—check out the surrounding landscape! We even bought a tiny bottle of beautiful pink stones as a souvenir! 💖

Setting Sail!

At 10:15 AM, we received a call to enter the boat. The passage across the lake was delightful, taking about 13 minutes with the gentle wind at our backs. The captain shared interesting insights and safety instructions as we navigated to the opposite shore. Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by our charming driver who provided entertaining and informative commentary on the sights around Lake Shasta.

The Cavern Adventure Begins

Once we reached the cavern entrance, our guide greeted us with helpful tips and soon led us into the wonders of the cave that are said to be around 250 million years old. The temperature inside is a cool 58°F year-round, providing a perfect escape from the outdoors. Our guide illuminated various formations with her remote as she explained the stunning natural artistry, and the final point featured fantastic audio and lighting effects—truly memorable! 🎇

During the 40-minute tour, we learned a lot about stalactites and stalagmites, expanding our knowledge of these natural wonders. The return route led us back along a different path of stairs, completing our adventure through the caverns and back to our transportation. 🚍
