Exploring Utah’s Hidden Landscapes: A Road Trip Adventure
Exploring Utah’s Hidden Landscapes: A Road Trip Adventure
This Independence Day, embark on an unforgettable road trip through the majestic landscapes of Las Vegas, Zion National Park, and Arches National Park. Along the way, we’ll explore some lesser-known hidden gems near Hanksville, Utah. These secluded spots, untouched by heavy tourism, offer breathtaking views that feel almost extraterrestrial—perfect for a sci-fi enthusiast like me! 📸
1. Space Needle (Utah)
One of my absolute favorite hidden gems is the Space Needle. Surrounded by rugged mountains and stark black earth, this striking rock formation reaches for the sky in a display of both sanctity and grandeur. The location is not marked on any maps, so you’ll need to navigate to 38°23’37.7″N 110°49’56.4″W. Be sure to exit Highway 24 at 38°22’10.0″N 110°49’54.8″W, avoiding the route that passes Factory Butte.
Once you leave the main road, you can drive right next to a wooden fence. If the gate is open, feel free to drive through; if it’s closed, a leisurely 40-minute hike will take you to the Space Needle. I highly recommend walking to the back of the needle for a stunning photographic perspective—trust me, it’s worth it! (The hike isn’t too difficult, provided it’s not raining.) 🌌
2. Factory Butte
This stunning site resembles a fortress from an epic sci-fi movie, standing alone on a vast alien landscape. You can easily navigate to Factory Butte directly on your map—it’s located along the dirt road leading to Moon Overlook. If only I had a drone for aerial photography of this magnificent site! 🚁
3. Moonscape Overlook
The terrain here is reminiscent of the Moon’s surface. You can find it easily on your map, and the cliffs provide several small platforms for adventurous photography. However, safety first! Use caution when walking out to the ledges. As the entire route consists of dirt paths, a 4WD vehicle is a must! 🌔
4. Mars-like Terrain (Bubble Mountains)
For this location, navigate to 38°24’51.3″N 110°47’07.2″W. Start at 38°22’19.1″N 110°46’06.6″W to exit Highway 24, and just follow your GPS. Along the way, you will pass the MDRS lunar surface research station and a sign warning of private property. Stay on the tire tracks, and you will soon reach your destination! 🌌
Final Thoughts
For all my fellow photography enthusiasts heading to Utah, don’t forget to pack a wide-angle lens! And if possible, bring a drone to capture the otherworldly beauty of this remarkable landscape. 🌍✨
