Exploring Whatnot: A Game-Changer in E-Commerce without Live Streaming

Whatnot has become a significant player in the live-streaming e-commerce sector, attracting attention for its unique approach. However, many may wonder: can one succeed on this platform without going live? The answer is a resounding yes!

My Journey with Whatnot

Two months ago, I opened my shop on Whatnot. Initially hesitant about live streaming, I chose to focus on other sales strategies. To my delight, just two weeks ago, my shop started seeing a steady flow of orders. Even in the first month, when sales were slow, I was satisfied with receiving at least one order per week. 😄

Building Reputation Over Time

As time passed, I began accumulating positive reviews, which significantly boosted my shop’s credibility. These accolades played a crucial role in attracting more customers. If this growth trend continues, I might even consider treating Whatnot as a primary sales source!

Assessing Platform Performance

I wanted to share an update on my performance across different platforms:

  • First Tier: Mercari, Etsy, Shopify
  • Second Tier: Depop and Whatnot (recently elevated from the third tier!)
  • Third Tier: Poshmark, eBay

The Challenges Ahead

Recently, Poshmark and eBay have experienced significant fluctuations. Poshmark, in particular, has made questionable decisions regarding its listings, leading to a noticeable decline in traffic. Despite having a large number of listings that I update regularly, the platform’s restrictions make it impossible to delete underperforming items, resulting in further dips in visibility.

As for eBay, my sales have plateaued primarily due to infrequent listing updates. Most of my orders come from international buyers, supplemented occasionally by larger sales. Maintaining momentum on these platforms remains a challenge.

Conclusion

Embarking on an e-commerce venture in the USA offers a mix of challenges and rewards. Whatnot’s unique position allows for success beyond live streaming, proving that consistent efforts and adapting to industry shifts can yield positive results. If you’re considering entering this market, remember: you don’t need to go live to thrive!
