Surfing and Serendipity: A Memorable Day in Hawaii
Last week in Hawaii, I had an unforgettable experience while taking a surfing lesson. I met a guy from Washington, D.C. with adorable curly black hair who looked a bit charming while we were catching waves 🌊. During the lesson, we exchanged a few playful comments [laughing emoji], and afterward, I casually mentioned my plans to visit the Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden. He replied that he had rented a car, and I invited him to join me. “Is it okay if my mom comes too?” I asked, showcasing my filial piety [loving emoji]. He assured me it was no problem.
In the afternoon, he drove over to my hotel, picked my mom and me up, and we set off for the botanical garden. We chatted intermittently along the way. On our return journey, my mom, ever so considerate [smirking emoji], decided to head back to the hotel for some rest.
We ended up sharing some delightful poke and enjoying drinks at the hotel lounge. I learned he was born in Virginia, moved to D.C. during high school, served in the Navy for three years, and was now studying in college. He was preparing to graduate and then study for four more years to become a dentist. We shared our ages, and I realized he was just 25, seven years younger than me [astonished emoji]. That evening, we were lucky to witness fireworks at Waikiki Beach since it was Friday. We watched the spectacular display and strolled along the beach. Surprisingly, nothing romantic happened, which left me a bit puzzled. It seemed he was quite comfortable hanging out with my mom, which I took as a good sign.
During our time at the garden and while sitting on the beach, he pulled out a Polaroid camera to take some photos of us. He kept the first shot for himself and handed the second one to me. As the evening approached, I mentioned I needed to return to my hotel by 8:30 PM. He offered to drop me off, and at the elevator entrance, we shared a polite hug.
After reaching my room, I found myself still pondering the day’s events [laughing emoji]. Suddenly, I received a message from him saying, “Hey, can you come back down real quick? I forgot something.” He added that I should bring the photo. Initially, I thought he might just want to sign it. When I arrived downstairs, I handed him a pen, and he hastily scribbled a triangle. I jokingly pointed out that he forgot to write the date, and he awkwardly jotted down the year and day, then asked what month it was. I stifled a laugh and said, “Of course, it’s May!”
After he finished, he passed the pen and the photo back to me. He opened his arms, and I thought he wanted another hug. Instead, he unexpectedly leaned in and kissed me. I instinctively wrapped my arms around his neck, and it turned out to be a sweet and innocent kiss.
That night, as I lay in bed, I silently screamed with joy at how wonderfully the day unfolded, especially during that enchanting sunset. 🌅
