Discovering Martha’s Vineyard: A Hidden Gem in Massachusetts
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Martha’s Vineyard, and as someone who has lived in New England for three years, I didn’t have high expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much the trip exceeded my expectations! 🌊
Getting There: A Scenic Journey
Starting from NYC, I hopped on the SeaStreak ferry from East 35th Street. The journey took about 4.5 to 5 hours, and the ferry offered snacks and drinks on board. The ride was relatively smooth, but it’s wise to take motion sickness medication in case of any storms. Once on the island, you can easily use the free bus service or catch an Uber. Just a note—finding parking can be a bit of a challenge!
Exploring the Island: Tours and Attractions
I highly recommend taking a circular Island Tour, which lasts about three hours. Starting and ending at the ferry terminal, the tour guide drives you around, sharing captivating stories about the island’s history and highlighting stunning sights along the way. One of the highlights was a stop at a lighthouse, where you can admire the beautiful white cliffs.
Martha’s Vineyard is also home to several charming farms. My top recommendation is the Island Alpaca Company, where you can see adorable alpacas and even pet the baby ones! On the other hand, I would skip Ghost Island Farm as it didn’t offer much excitement.
Culinary Delights: A Food Lover’s Paradise
The dining experience on the island was undoubtedly a highlight of my trip. Every restaurant we visited showcased a pinnacle of New England cuisine. One standout was Offshore Ale Co, where the lobster roll and Salmon BLT were absolutely delicious.
Another must-visit is Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company, known for their generous portion sizes. In fact, two girls with smaller appetites could easily share a main dish. If you’re looking to switch it up from seafood, try The Newes From America, which serves the best chicken pot pie I’ve ever tasted, along with delightful beef sandwiches.
I must also mention Cozy Corner Café’s salmon sandwich, which is comparable to those from Apollo Bagels and is sure to satisfy your cravings! 🥪
Conclusion: A Perfect Getaway
Overall, Martha’s Vineyard is a beautiful island inhabited mostly by affluent residents, providing a safe and relaxing atmosphere. The restaurants here reflect New England’s culinary excellence and are well worth the visit. If you plan to travel here, summer is the best time to enjoy the island—it’s only open from June to September. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience this charming destination! 🌞
