Exploring Alaska: An Unforgettable Journey Through the Last Frontier
Are you ready for an adventure? Pack your bags and get ready to explore the breathtaking beauty of Alaska! From the urban charm of Anchorage to the majestic heights of Denali, this travel blog recounts an unforgettable journey through stunning landscapes and incredible experiences. 🌲✈️
Day 1: Arrival in Anchorage
On July 12th, we landed in Anchorage and took a moment to soak in the vibrant city atmosphere. After a brief exploration, we dined at Glacier Brewhouse, which turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! With delicious food and a lively ambiance, it was the perfect way to start our Alaskan adventure.
Day 2: Private Glacier Tour
On July 13th, we opted for an exhilarating private glacier tour at a cost of around $1,000 per person. 🧐 We flew over to a breathtaking glacier, where we donned drysuits to stay warm and buoyant in icy waters. This part of the trip offered both paddle boarding and exploration opportunities on the glacier. The experience felt surreal—just our group, the glacier, and the hushed beauty surrounding us. The guide ensured our safety and captured stunning pictures throughout the journey. With no wind and moderate temperatures, we just needed to apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses. The physical demand was low, making this a 120% recommended activity! 🚁
Day 3: Scenic Drive to Denali
On July 14th, we embarked on a scenic drive from Valdez to Denali. The journey was filled with mind-blowing views, particularly at Thompson Pass and Worthington Glacier, where we paused to soak it all in. The landscapes in this part of Alaska were utterly breathtaking! 🚘
Day 4: Denali Tour Bus Experience
Although we were excited about our Denali tour bus experience on July 15th, we felt a bit underwhelmed. While we did see some wildlife, the scenery was similar to what we had seen during our drive. The tour also included a dog sledding experience, where we learned about Alaska’s history and sledding culture. It was informative but lacked interactivity. Younger visitors may enjoy the dog tour more than adults. It’s worth noting that we found no need to take the pricey yellow tour bus for over $100 to explore Denali National Park.
Day 5: Helicopter Flight Over Denali
On July 16th, we indulged in a helicopter flight over Denali, which cost us around $400 each. This experience was nothing short of magical, especially when we landed on the icefield! The helicopter took us incredibly close to the mountains and snowy peaks. When we touched down on the glacier, it felt like stepping onto another planet—vast, open, and peacefully quiet. Pro tip: If the pilot asks for a co-pilot, be sure to raise your hand for an exhilarating immersive experience! 🚁🌨️
Accommodation and Dining Experiences
We booked our accommodations about a month in advance, with an average price range of $250–350 per night. The hotels offered comfortable stays, slightly above a typical motel’s standard. As for dining, the overall quality of restaurants was average, focusing mainly on providing hearty meals without any extraordinary options.
Recommendations:
- Recommended: Glacier Brewhouse & 49th in Anchorage for quality dining.
- Not Recommended: Fat Mermaid in Valdez (poor food quality) and Highliner in Seward (mediocre offerings).
Stay Tuned!
In the next blog, we’ll explore hiking at Exit Glacier and unforgettable whale-watching experiences! 🥾🐳
