Navigating Diversity and Challenges in the USA: A CPT Experience

The CPT program has been a vivid reflection of the diversity and intricacies of American society. As international students, we often find ourselves amid various backgrounds and aspirations, ultimately shaping the American cultural landscape.

Real Stories of Struggle and Perseverance

Within our cohort, one classmate shared their experience working at McKinsey for three to four years, facing the daunting challenge of visa lottery rejections four times. Despite being part of a world-renowned consulting firm, the identity dilemma continues to loom large over individuals like them. Another classmate, an employee at a non-governmental organization (NGO), works tirelessly in social welfare and public service but struggles to secure a work visa, leaving them feeling adrift in their career journey. These narratives encapsulate the harsh reality that, while aspiring to achieve professional dreams, many are hindered by the invisible barriers of “immigration policy.”

The Unseen Struggles of Professionals

Consider the story of a lawyer who, despite their children entering college and familial life evolving into a new chapter, remains locked in a struggle due to the denial of their National Interest Waiver (NIW). They continue to contribute to the legal profession in the U.S. but are denied equal treatment and rights, contrasting sharply with those they serve. Similarly, one of our classmates serves as a social worker and a psychotherapist, balancing a bustling daytime job with evening healing sessions to mend emotional wounds, both for clients and themselves.

An Unequal System

One student expressed frustration upon learning that an acquaintance successfully entered the U.S. through a refugee program and achieved green card status within a year. This reality leaves many questioning their own circumstances, a sentiment echoed by many in our cohort. We are grateful for the opportunities we have but can’t ignore the absurdity of our continued struggle to navigate the educational systems while others may seemingly glide through.

Reflections on inequality and hope

This experience in the CPT program illustrates the pervasive themes of inequality and unfairness present in the U.S. immigration system. Every classmate you encounter is filled with ambition, striving for a brighter future—yet often finds their efforts met with an intricate, opaque immigration framework, hindering equitable rewards for hard work. Regardless of their professional standing, whether working in elite firms or in the trenches of public service, the struggle and uncertainty faced in this system remain uniquely understood by each individual.

A Microcosm of Society

The diversity demonstrated within the CPT program, with students hailing from 86 different countries, serves as a microcosm of the rich tapestry that is American society. It underscores the ongoing battle among varying identities, backgrounds, and opportunities, encapsulating both the potential and challenges faced by many.

Together Towards a Brighter Future

As we forge ahead, let’s embrace the hope for a brighter future where hard work is met with fair opportunity. May we continue to learn from each other, celebrate our differences, and strive for success in an ever-competitive global landscape.
