Navigating Job Changes in Singapore: A Guide for EP Holders
It’s been a week since I joined my new company, and I’m feeling energized by the fulfilling work I’m engaging in! 🔋 I’ve finally carved out some time to jot down my experiences and insights, especially for my fellow sisters in the internet community who are contemplating a job change. 😆 Since there aren’t many EP holders around me who are transitioning jobs, I hope this advice will assist friends in Singapore considering similar moves. Let’s dive into some common queries!
Can I Resign Without a Job Offer? 🤔
It’s not advisable to resign without securing a new position first. Currently, the job market feels quite challenging, especially for foreigners. The landscape can be less accommodating, making it crucial to have a job lined up before making any drastic decisions.
If I Resign, Can I Stay in Singapore After My EP Is Canceled? 🤔
Once your EP is canceled, you will receive a Short-Term Visit Pass (STVP). For the Employment Pass, you have one month to remain in the country, while the EP provides a three-month timeframe. However, keep in mind that the STVP becomes invalid if you leave the country, meaning any subsequent re-entry would be under a tourist visa.
What If I Finished My Studies but Did Not Apply for an LTVP? Can I Still Apply After Getting My EP? 🤔
If you transitioned directly to an EP within two years of graduating without applying for a Long Term Visit Pass (LTVP), you may still be eligible. While I haven’t personally gone through that process, I’ve seen success stories from others who managed to extend their stay this way.
When Should I Resign After Receiving a New Job Offer? 🤔
It’s wise to hold off on resigning until your new company has tested and secured your EP. The best practice is to wait until the company’s application is approved and you receive your In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). This adds a layer of security before informing your current employer of your departure.
Can I Leave Immediately After Resigning? 🤔
Not typically! ❌ In Singapore, most employment contracts include a notice period. While you’ll need to fulfill this period after resigning, many companies are open to negotiation, so it’s worthwhile to discuss an early departure with your boss.
When Will My New EP Be Issued? 🤔
The issuance of your new EP occurs after your current employer cancels your old EP. Once your new company’s HR initiates the application, you can expect a turnaround of just 1-2 days. In my case, my EP was issued on the same day! Although transitioning EPs can be swift, those without PR status may find job switching more complex. Thus, securing a new offer prior to resignation is highly advised. 😂
Wishing everyone the best in their job searches! 🥳 Remember, preparation is key to a smoother transition. #LoveTheMomentsAtWork #StudyInSingapore #JobSearchInSingapore #EmploymentPass #LifeInSingapore #JobChangeInSingapore
