Essential Guide to EAD Application for J2, F1, H4, L2 Visa Holders in the USA

The Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is a critical step for individuals on J2, F1, H4, and L2 visas, as well as those applying for Adjustment of Status (AOS). As a J2 visa holder myself, I found the application process a bit overwhelming initially. Below, I’ve compiled a comprehensive checklist 🧾 and important tips ⚠️ to make your EAD application smoother.

Document Checklist for EAD Application

  1. Cover Letter:
Craft a cover letter emphasizing that the intent to work is not to provide financial support for another. I used a template from a friend, which was super helpful! 😂
  2. I-765 Form:
Download it from the USCIS website. Ensure you check the option to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) and don’t forget to sign it! ✍️ Unsigned forms will be returned for a signature.
  3. G-1145 Form:
This form can also be downloaded from the USCIS website.
  4. G-1450 Form:
If you opt to pay the EAD application fee via credit card and are submitting a paper application, submit this signed form. Otherwise, do not include it if you are paying by check or money order.
  5. Documentation for J1 and J2:
Include copies of your I-94, DS-2019, passport, and visa pages.
  6. Proof of Financial Support:
Attach income statements for your J1 sponsor.
  7. Marriage Documentation:
Include copies of your marriage certificate along with a translation. ⚠️ I didn’t notarize mine but used a friend’s template for translation, which worked fine for them!
  8. Applicant Photographs:
Provide two recent photos (taken within the last 30 days), with your name and I-94 number written on the back. Ensure the size is 2×2 inches, matching U.S. visa specifications. I took mine myself and got them printed at Walmart for just $0.14! 👍
  9. Application Fee:
The current fee is $520. I found it easiest to pay with a credit card 💳 for direct deduction.

Mailing Your Application

Before mailing your application, check the USPS website for the appropriate mailing address for your location. Purchase an envelope from USPS, fill in both your address and the destination address, and pack your materials securely. I chose a mailing option that guaranteed delivery within three days for $10, plus an additional $5 for insurance, totaling $15. There’s also an express option available for $30 if you want it faster!

Important Tips for Your EAD Application

  • Ensure that I-765, G-1450 (if applicable), and the back of your photos are all signed by hand ✍️ to avoid any delays.
  • Credit card payments are only accepted from domestic U.S. cards, so plan accordingly 💳.
  • I’m not too familiar with money orders, but based on my experience, using a credit card simplifies things.

Good luck to everyone on your journey to obtaining your EAD! Remember, patience is key. #EAD #EADCard #EADTimeline #USAEAD #J2Visa #GreenCard #WorkVisa
