Understanding the New USCIS I-140 Form: A Guide for Applicants
Starting from April 1, 2024, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will implement a new version of the I-140 form. This has raised numerous questions among applicants about how to properly fill out the first page of the form. Having once experienced the frustration of having my application package returned due to errors, I understand how valuable clear guidance can be. 🤣
Key Sections of the I-140 Form
While filling out the I-140 form, remember that aside from basic personal information, Sections 5 and 6 are particularly prone to errors. In fact, I once had my application returned solely because I left these parts blank!
Avoiding Common Mistakes
If you are applying under the self-petition category (DIY personal application), it’s crucial to fill out Part 1, Section 5 with “No” and Section 6 with “Yes.” This is vital because it’s only under these circumstances that USCIS deems you eligible for the $300 Reduced Asylum Fee. Failing to fill these out correctly could lead to unnecessary delays, as you may receive a return of your application due to payment errors. 🤣
What’s Next?
In upcoming posts, I will share examples for the remaining pages of the I-140 form, as well as best practices for completing other forms related to the National Interest Waiver (NIW). I encourage everyone to participate in the comments section for further discussions and clarifications. Your shared experiences can be immensely helpful to others navigating this process!
