Understanding EVUS Registration for US Visas

Understanding EVUS Registration: 9 Key Questions Answered

Last week, a friend of mine faced a shocking experience at an airport in the USA. Although she had a ten-year visa, a booked flight, and hotel reservations, she was informed at the immigration checkpoint:

“Your EVUS is not updated, you cannot enter.”

Feeling bewildered, she believed that having a ten-year visa was sufficient to gain access to the United States. Unfortunately, she was sent back on the same flight, her ticket was wasted, and her plans were completely disrupted. Even the staff affirmed that incidents like this have become increasingly common.

With the recent implementation of the EVUS registration fee of $30 💵, misunderstandings regarding registration, validity, processes, fees, and reasons for failure have escalated. To prevent more travelers from falling into these pitfalls, I’ve compiled a list of the 9 most common misconceptions about EVUS from “Who Must Register” to “Does Approval Guarantee Entry.”

1️⃣ What is the EVUS?

The Electronic Visa Update System (EVUS) is an electronic platform that determines the eligibility of travelers holding a ten-year B1, B2, or B1/B2 visitor visa for temporary business or tourism in the United States. Travelers fitting this description must register for EVUS prior to their arrival in the USA.

2️⃣ Who Must Register for EVUS?

If you meet all the following criteria ✅, you must register for EVUS before traveling to the United States:

  • Be a citizen of mainland China (Residents of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan do not need to register)
  • Hold a valid passport from mainland China
  • Travel to the U.S. for short-term business or tourism
  • Possess a ten-year B1, B2, or B1B2 visa

3️⃣ What is the Fee and When Does it Start?

Starting from September 30, 2025, there will be a fee of $30 for each EVUS registration. After submission, approval is generally received within a few minutes, but it may take longer in some cases.

4️⃣ How Long is the Registration Valid?

EVUS registration is typically valid for two years, during which you can travel multiple times. However, if your passport or visa expires earlier, the validity will be determined by the earliest expiration date.

5️⃣ Can a Visa on an Old Passport Still be Used?

Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your expected departure from the U.S. The visa must be a ten-year B1/B2 or B1B2. If your visa is in an old passport, you need to get a new passport before registering.

6️⃣ What are the Requirements for Passports and Visas?

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your anticipated exit from the U.S. The visa must also be a valid ten-year B1/B2 or B1B2. If the visa is on an old passport, a new passport must be obtained first before registration.

7️⃣ When is the Best Time to Register?

Theoretically, you can register at any time. However, it is recommended to complete registration at least 72 hours prior to your travel.

8️⃣ When is Re-registration Necessary?

You must register again if:

  • You change your passport
  • Your name or nationality changes
  • Any details in your previous registration change (e.g., if you’ve been denied entry before, etc.)

9️⃣ Do You Need to Re-register if You’ve Registered Before and Paid?

No, if your EVUS remains valid, you can continue using it without re-registering. You will incur the fee only upon your next registration.

By understanding these key elements of EVUS registration, travelers can ensure a smoother experience when visiting the United States. Avoid the pitfalls that many have encountered and make your journey stress-free! ✈️
