Understanding the Cost of Studying Abroad in South Korea 🇰🇷

As prospective students consider studying in South Korea, a major question looms: what is the actual cost? In this blog, we’ll break down the various expenses that you can expect while living and studying in this vibrant country. 🌏

Fixed Monthly Expenses ⚠️

1. Mobile Phone Bill

Your mobile phone bill is a non-negotiable part of your budget. A basic plan starts at around 13,000 KRW (approximately $10.70), while a good data package will cost you between 30,000 – 40,000 KRW ($24-$32). 2. Rent

Rent in the Seoul area can range significantly between 460,000 – 900,000 KRW ($372 – $736) per month. This price varies based on your location, apartment size, and type (apartments typically have management fees). Dormitories are often available but usually reserved for freshmen and top-performing students. Keep in mind, not all students at Korean universities have guaranteed accommodation!

3. Utilities (Water & Electricity)

Your utility bills will depend on the size and type of your apartment, typically ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 KRW ($16-$32). Larger places may cost significantly more, especially in winter when heating is necessary. For those in dorms, this expense won’t apply.

4. National Health Insurance

All international students in South Korea must enroll in National Health Insurance, costing at least 70,000 KRW ($56) per month. If you work part-time and acquire a work permit, this may increase to between 150,000 – 200,000 KRW ($120-$160), but you’ll likely earn money too, helping offset some costs.

5. Tuition Fees

Tuition fees vary by university and program, so it’s best to check your school’s official website for the most accurate information.

6. Personal Care and Supplies

While males might spend less on personal care, females often have regular expenses for feminine hygiene products and cosmetics, making personal care an essential aspect of your monthly budget. The amount will depend on your individual spending habits.

7. Meal Costs

At our school cafeteria, breakfast costs around 1,000 KRW ($0.80), and meals range from 5,000 – 7,000 KRW ($4-$6) for lunch and dinner. Assuming you eat all your meals at school on weekdays, you’d spend at least 11,000 KRW ($9) a day. Weekends can increase your expenses if you dine out. Eating out can range from 6,000 – 15,000 KRW ($5-$12) for a regular meal. If you wish to cook at home, your grocery costs can drastically reduce your daily expenditures.

Summary of Fixed Expenses

Your unavoidable monthly expenses come to a minimum of approximately 4,500 CNY (around $700). Keep in mind, this is a tight budget, and living comfortably may require more! #Korea #StudyInKorea #CostOfLiving
