Understanding the Costs of Pursuing a PhD in the USA

Recently, I posted about the costs involved in pursuing a PhD in the USA, which sparked a lively discussion. Today, I would like to share a comprehensive overview of my expenses from the application phase to present, providing future students with some insights.

My Background

Coming from a humble small-town family, studying abroad independently was never a feasible option for me. After receiving my offer, I stopped relying on my family for financial support. Thankfully, my scholarship covers my rent and living expenses, and I pride myself on being frugal! During winter and summer breaks, I also work as a research assistant (RA) and save costs by sharing accommodation and cooking for myself.

Expense Breakdown

1. Application Phase (in RMB)

  • 🌏 Language Tests: 0 RMB – I used my existing language scores, saving a significant amount.
  • 📚 GRE Costs: Approximately 1660 RMB – I sent my scores directly on exam day, avoiding additional shipping fees. For those who send scores later, expect to pay around $35 per school.
  • 💼 Agency Fees: 40,000 RMB – Due to my average undergraduate background and my lack of understanding of the US application process, I sought guidance, which can vary widely in cost. I suggest DIY for those more experienced!
  • 📄 Application Fees: About 3,000 RMB – Generally, higher-ranked schools have more expensive application fees.
  • ✉️ International Document Shipping Fees: 600 RMB – Some schools only accept hard copies, requiring additional mailing costs.

2. Transition and Settlement Phase (in USD)

After receiving my offer, I sent an email to the university early to discuss my scholarship, as my main household has since started new families, making it hard to ask for financial help again.

  • 🏠 Rent + Deposit: $1,000 – I’m sharing accommodation and was able to negotiate the deposit timeframe.
  • 🍽️ First Month Living Expenses: $2,000 – This included cooking for myself, taking advantage of free meals during university events, and purchasing second-hand furniture.
  • 📱 Phone & Internet: $80 – I chose a Mint mobile plan and Xfinity for internet access.

3. Monthly Expenses After Settling (in USD)

With my scholarship kicking in, life became much easier financially after purchasing essentials and furniture. My monthly expenses stabilized, especially with the all-expenses-paid scholarship covering tuition.

  • 🏢 Rent and Utilities: $1,500 – This covers all accommodation-related costs.
  • 🍴 Food Expenses: Initially kept under $500 due to the many free meals available, especially in the first three months.
  • 🚍 Transportation: $30 – I considered buying a car but decided against it due to the high maintenance costs.
  • 🌟 Personal Expenses: $300 – This includes some entertainment and leisure activities.

Final Thoughts

Initially, I was very frugal with my spending, but as my salary began to come in, I gradually added some comforts like kitchenware and furniture. Budgeting wisely has allowed me to thrive without seeking financial help from my family. 🌟
